On Friday, we shared our review of Differential Equations, by Julian Iragorri and Lou Aronica.  You can read our review here.

Today, we are excited to bring you a guest post from Lou Aronica, one of the authors of Differential Equations, where he tells us about the inspiration for the book and more about magic realism.  Aronica is a New York Times best selling author and President and Publisher of The Fiction Studio and Publisher of The Story Plant.  You can learn more about him here.

Blog ImageDifferential Equations, the novel Julian Iragorri and I just published, had numerous sources of inspiration. Julian’s family story was one, as was the fact that both of us had some mind/body experience. Another key source of inspiration were the magic realists. I knew that Julian and I could collaborate well when I learned in our first conversation that both of us considered Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude a favorite novel. Further conversation revealed a shared affection for Isabel Allende, Jorge Amado, and others. I’d wanted to write a magic realist novel for some time, and with Julian I would finally get the chance to do so.

I’d incorporated the fantastic in my work before. My novel Blue has an entire storyline set in the imaginary world created by a father and his daughter when the girl was much younger. Magic realism is different from fantasy, though. In magic realist fiction, the world is very much the same as ours except that magical things happen as a matter of course. These things aren’t phenomena; they are just the way the world works. For example, Vidente, one of the main characters in Differential Equations is someone who can genuinely see the future. Her friends and neighbors come to her when they feel the need to know what is going to happen to them. They see Vidente as someone with a gift, much like a baker or a tailor has a gift, but not as someone charmed by the supernatural.

What I love about magic realism is its ability to extend the natural world rather than diverge from it. As a novelist, this medium provides me with an extra set of tools, and it is liberating. It is as though a painter were provided with new colors. By allowing certain types of magic to seem completely real, I can create new opportunities for drama and new methods for exploring a story’s themes. For example, in her very first scene in Differential Equations, Vidente sees a vision of her imminent death. Without this, she would have approached the events in the story in a completely different – and, in our opinion, less meaningful – way. Toward the end of the novel, a magical event allows the novel’s primary message to get through to both the characters and readers. That moment would have been much less dramatic otherwise.

When done respectfully, magic realism has the ability to illuminate experience. Those who inspired us to write Differential Equations were masters at it. I hope we did them proud.

What kind of books do you like to read when you travel?

Hubby and I are headed to New York City for Book Expo America.  Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve discovered so many books I want to read this Summer and it seems like I’ve been downloading a new book every day to take with us.  I’m pretty sure my eReader is just as over-packed as my suitcase!

Blog ImageHere’s a sneak peek at what I’ll be reading and writing about for the next few weeks.  What sounds the most interesting to you?

I do plan to update you a couple of times over the next week about all the exciting book-ish news that gets talked about at Book Expo.  To prepare myself, I’ve been reading  BEA BUZZ BOOKS 2012, which includes a summary of this Fall’s hottest titles and excerpts of 30 upcoming titles.

So far, I’m most looking forward to reading the full book for MEMOIRS OF AN IMAGINARY FRIEND by Matthew Dicks.  After the first four chapters, I can tell this is one book I must own as soon as it is published in August.

Here’s a little more about it:

Told from the point of view of a child’s imaginary friend, a heartwarming, heartbreaking read in the vein of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Room.

Budo is Max’s imaginary friend. He and his fellow imaginary friends watch over their children until the day comes that the child stops imagining them. And then they’re gone.

Budo has lasted a lot longer than most imaginary friends – four years – because Max needs him more. His parents argue about sending him to a special school. But Max is perfectly happy if everything is just kept the way it is, and nothing out of the ordinary happens.

Unfortunately, something out of the ordinary is going to happen – and then he’ll need Budo more than ever…

I still have 28 more excerpts to read before Monday, but if they are all as captivating as MEMOIRS, then readers everywhere have a lot to look forward to this year!

After I finish BUZZ BOOKS, I’ll be starting THE LAST REFUGE by Ben Coes.  I’ve read rave reviews about Ben Coes’ books (POWER DOWN and COUP D’ETAT), and he’s been on my list of authors to try so when I got the chance to read and review his new thriller coming out July 3, I didn’t hesitate to say Yes!  It arrived on my eReader Friday afternoon.  I’ll let you know what I think as soon as I finish it, but this is one I’m a little giddy over.

Here’s a little teaser for you from the book synopsis:

Off a quiet street in Brooklyn, Israeli Special Forces commander Kohl Meir is captured by operatives of Iranian intelligence, who smuggle Meir back to Tehran, where he’s imprisoned in Iran’s most notorious penitentiary –Evin – then tortured and prepared for a show trial that will likely lead to the firing squad.

Only hours before, Meir had been tipped off that Iran had finally succeeded in building its first nuclear weapon, one they were planning to use to attack Israel. Meir’s source was a high level Iranian government official and his proof was a photo of the bomb itself. Meir was in the U.S. to recruit Dewey Andreas for a secret operation to destroy the Iranian bomb. His capture by Iran put an end to all that.

Dewey Andreas, a former member of Delta, owes his life to Meir and the team of Israeli commandos who saved his life. Now to repay his debt, Dewey must attempt the impossible – rescue Meir from Evin, and find and eliminate Iran’s nuclear bomb before it’s brought to Tel Aviv by boat and detonated.

Unfortunately, Dewey’s first moves catch the attention of Abu Paria, the brutal and brilliant head of VEVAK, Iran’s intelligence service. Dewey must outwit and outfight an opponent with equal cunning, skill and determination, and with the fate of millions hanging in the balance.

With the help of leaked information from high-level officials inside of Iran and dissidents from groups outside the country, Dewey devises a high-risk, high-stakes operation that will allow him to find and hijack the device before it’s too late.

That’s really probably all I’ll have time to read on this trip, but when I get home, I’m also looking forward to DEAD SCARED by S. J. Bolton, ISTANBUL PASSAGE by Joseph Kanon, POTBOILER by Jesse Kellerman and HOUSE BLOOD by Mike Lawson.

It promises to be a very busy book Summer with tons of great new books and authors to discover.  I’m excited to be reading so many new-to-me authors and hope to find some new favorites.

New Release Tuesday: November 29

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving weekend!  My husband and I went to visit my side of the family and had a blast visiting with everyone and playing with our nieces and nephews.  I had a reading plan for the weekend, which I posted here last week, but I totally underestimated my reading time.  Oh well, I’ll get there!

I’m excited to share this week’s new releases with you, there are lots of great new reads from authors like Ann Rule, Dale Brown, Richard North Patterson and so many more!  As always, you can see all of this week’s new releases at Lazy Day Books, but here are a few of the highlights.

RAVEN STRIKE by Dale Brown. The mission is classified . . . and illegal.  In the blistering heat of the Sudan, the CIA has gone rogue. A SUMMER IN EUROPE by Marilyn Brant. On her thirtieth birthday, Gwendolyn Reese receives an unexpected present from her widowed Aunt Bea: a grand tour of Europe in the company of Bea’s Sudoku and Mahjongg Club. The prospect isn’t entirely appealing. But when the gift she is expecting, an engagement ring from her boyfriend, doesn’t materialize, Gwen decides to go. At first, Gwen approaches the trip as if it’s the math homework she assigns her students, diligently checking monuments off her must-see list. But amid the bougainvillea and stunning vistas of southern Italy, something changes. Gwen begins to live in the moment – skipping down stone staircases in Capri, running her fingers over a glacier in view of the Matterhorn, racing through the Louvre, and taste-testing pastries at a Marseilles cafe.

ONSTAGE, OFFSTAGE by Michael Bublé. He’s sold more than 25 million records. His live shows fill the world’s biggest stadiums to capacity. He has captured hearts everywhere with his classic style. Now, for the first time ever, Grammy Award–winning singer Michael Bublé offers fans an all-access, behind-the-scenes glimpse at his private life, onstage and off.Pairing the singer’s own heartfelt words with hundreds of exclusive, never-before-seen photographs, this unique diary reveals Bublé’s inspirational journey, from singing into a hairbrush in his suburban Canadian bedroom to entertaining thousands onstage at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden.

HI, MY NAME IS JACK by Jack Watts. In this grippingly honest narrative about one man’s journey from addiction and self-destruction to recovery and a changed life, readers will be dismayed at the hurtful patterns of his two alcoholic parents and how they scarred and shaped the outcome of their three sons forever. Watts openly talks of his multiple failed marriages, strained relationships with his children, overwhelming business losses, and the self-loathing and guilt that plagued him for years. In spite of all of this, Jack held on to the conviction he made more than fifteen years ago never to drink again. Gradually learning to make better choices, he discovered how to move past deeply engraved dysfunctions and become a productive, loving adult.

A KIDNAPPED SANTA CLAUS by Alex Robinson. First published in 1904, “A Kidnapped Santa Claus” by L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz, describes the action of some uncommon events in the land of Santa. Not far from the Laughing Valley where Santa and all his magical helpers live, and beyond the Forest of Burzee, there stands a huge mountain that contains the Cave of Demons. Each demon has a specialty: Selfishness, Envy, Hatred, Malice, and Repentance.  Adapted by Alex Robinson, author of several graphic novels, the action and menace of the tale will be enhanced and lightly spoofed. It seems a most appropriate treatment of Baum’s work- he was an author who often let his profound and unsettling meanings roil beneath the surface of his otherwise fanciful stories.

A WINTER DISCOVERY by Michael Baron. Baron presents us with his first novelette and his first holiday story, a touching, luminous, and openhearted tale of love, wonder, and revelation. Returning to the characters of his first novel, When You Went Away, Baron takes us again into the world of Gerry Rubato, a man who has been marked by loss and revived by love, and his son Reese, now five, who celebrates life at a remarkable level but is only now starting to understand that he was robbed of the chance of ever knowing his mother.  At once buoyant and poignant, and filled with irrepressible spirit, A Winter Discovery is a story of that will take you to new places in your heart.

ANY GIVEN CHRISTMAS by Candis Terry. Dean Silverthorne’s mother may be dead, but she still has matchmaking to do. When an injury dashes NFL Quarterback Dean Silverthorne’s Super Bowl dreams, he heads back to Deer Lick, Montana with a chip on his wounded shoulder, more determined than ever to get back in the game. He loves his kooky family, but this trip home is going to be a very brief Christmas visit. His game plan doesn’t include an instant attraction to Emma Hart, a feisty kindergarten teacher who seems to be the only person in Deer Lick not interested in the hometown hero.

A young man, with everything in the world he could ever wish for—wealth, comfort, and most of all, a loving father—leaves his home, taking his inheritance with him. Carelessly, he spends it all, and finds himself left penniless, homeless, and starving, lower than even the pigs.

Why I Love New Release Tuesdays

What is your all-time favorite book?

By now you all know that I adore Tuesdays, it really is my favorite day of the week!  Each Sunday afternoon, as I pre-load new releases to the website, I browse through the new titles, read the book descriptions and get so excited about what’s coming on Tuesday- it’s like whole new worlds of adventure await.  I can’t wait each week to share these new adventures with all of you!

And while all those new stories are exciting, sometimes you come across an old favorite in the new releases list that just makes you smile.  Maybe it’s updated with a new cover, a new introduction by the author or has a sneak peek of the author’s next book, but whatever has been added, the original story that first captured your heart doesn’t change at all.

In this week’s new releases is the 100th Anniversary edition of The Secret Garden.  Growing up, this was one of my very favorite books- I owned multiple copies, each worn out from reading and re-reading them.  This morning I was like that kid again, waiting for the official “on sale” time so I could download the new anniversary edition and immerse myself in the familiar tale.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to live at her uncle’s great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all–a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years.  Is everything in the garden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?

But’s that not the only book waiting for you to discover it, here are few more notable releases this week that I think you would enjoy.  Which ones are you looking forward to reading?

The List by Martin Fletcher.  Winner of a Jewish National Book Award for his previous book, Walking Israel, NBC Special Correspondent Martin Fletcher uses meticulous research and his own family’s history in this stunning novel.  Dramatizing explosive events in London and Palestine in the years directly following World War II, The List follows the lives of Edith and Georg, Austrian refugees who are expecting their first baby in a world unfriendly to Jews.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.  It’s the early 1980s–the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever.  In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads.  But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

And Nothing But The Truthiness by Lisa Rogak.  The Rise (And Further Rise) of Stephen Colbert.  A funny and personal portrait of the comedian who became the headline-making, ground-breaking star of The Colbert Report. “My name is Stephen Colbert, but I actually play someone on television named Stephen Colbert, who looks like me and talks like me, but who says things with a straight face [that] he doesn’t mean.” –Stephen Colbert.  Who is he really? In And Nothing But the Truthiness, biographer Lisa Rogak examines the man behind the character.

The Gravedigger’s Ball by Solomon Jones.  Just weeks after tracking down a killer known as the Angel of Death, Detective Mike Coletti stands at Mary Smithson’s grave, mourning the woman whose betrayal nearly cost him his life.  Moments later, a gunshot splits the air, placing Coletti on a collision course with the Gravedigger, a killer hell-bent on deciphering the secret of life and death.

As The Pig Turns by M. C. Beaton.  An Agatha Raisin Mystery.  After a disappointing Christmas season, the parish council has decided to hold a special event in January, complete with old-fashioned costumes, morris dancing, and a pig roast on the village green. Always one for a good roasting, Agatha Raisin organizes an outing to enjoy the merriment.  But as the fog lifts slightly, the sharp-eyed Agatha notices something peculiar about the pig: a tattoo of a heart with an arrow through it and the name Amy. “Stop!” she screams suddenly. “Pigs don’t have tattoos.” The “pig,” in fact, is Gary Beech, a policeman not exactly beloved by the locals, including Agatha herself.

Mrs. Lilly is Silly by Dan Gutman.  My Weirder School is weirder than ever! It’s Career Day at Ella Mentry School!  Mrs. Lilly is a reporter for the local paper. She’s going to come help the kids make their own newspaper, all about the school.  What will happen when A.J. and the gang become investigative reporters?  Who’s going to get fired?  Who’s going to end up in jail?  For the kiddos
